Foresight Friday 2025 brought together policymakers and global experts to discuss Finland’s long-term responsibilities to future generations and intergenerational fairness. The question remains open, and it belongs to all of us: what is our promise for future generations?
The European Democracy Shield (EUDS) is being prepared to bolster the continent’s democratic resilience. If it isn’t to become one of innumerable democracy initiatives, EU institutions need to be clear-sighted about the causes and stakes of our present moment.
Imagining futures where society has successfully undergone a sustainability transformation helps us envision a world in which today’s major negative trends have been brought under control. But what kind of positive futures have been proposed in recent years? At the request of the Finnish Expert Panel for Sustainable Development, Demos Helsinki conducted a literature review and drafted three preliminary visions of such futures.
How do societies make most of the extraordinary good luck of ever-longer life expectancies? How can nations be strategic as they manage the huge demographic shifts of the years ahead? How do we handle the transition of care needed over the next few decades? Demos Helsinki Fellow, Sir Geoff Mulgan, is unpacking these questions below in a personal and cross-functional account.

The answer isn’t less democracy, but more. New participatory and deliberative processes aimed at involving citizens in decision-making are gaining traction across Europe, but their long-term success depends on how well they are embedded into the public administration and society.
A new climate reality requires a more expansive and adaptive approach to security that can adequately respond to these interconnected risks. With security needs proliferating, how prepared are we for one of the biggest security threats of our time — surpassing climate tipping points? What is the purpose of security? What can we learn from Finland’s Comprehensive Security Model? This discussion paper was prepared for an event we co-hosted with Strategic Climate Risk Initiative in London on March 20th, called “Climate Resilience and Security: Reflections from the UK and Finland”.
Public debate in Finland suggests that care is in crisis, but “crisis” and a fixation on resourcing care services do not capture the full picture of why and how our need for care has changed and how we can meet that need. This publication by Demos Helsinki identifies that the care crisis signals the need for a care transition in which care cannot be confined to industrial frameworks.
Projects
The Climate-Proofing Nordic Security project examines whether the region’s whole-of-society security model is built for the climate reality now taking shape. Funded by the Nordic Climate and Air Programme (NKLP), the project combines climate-security risk mapping with a hands-on simulation exercise for decision-makers across Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland.
Jharkhand now has roadmaps through 2050 to steer a fair shift from coal, a trained district cohort and a shared method. The work finished in May 2025 and left the state with people who can act.
How can we secure societal wellbeing and sustain the promises of the welfare state in a world where economic growth is limited or even cools down? Sustainability rooted in sufficiency, rather than growth, can reshape businesses, the economy, and societal wellbeing.
