Transforming cities

Cities can lead collective action. For 20 years, we have helped city leaders and administrations transform their governance, equipping them with the mindset, tools, and knowledge to address societal challenges. This includes leading their local ecosystem to enable shared learning with common directionality, creating a culture and leadership equipped for today’s world, and developing the ability to navigate multi-level governance structures and discourses.

On the agenda

Which innovations can cities pursue to become catalysts of inclusive, digital, and green economies?

How can cities become living examples of true equity, shaping urban life around belonging and justice in an era that may challenge city life as we know it?

What kinds of transformative governance models could make cities hubs of collective power and democratic renewal?

NetZeroCities

As part of Horizon Europe, the EU launched a Mission for “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030”. Demos Helsinki contributes to this as part of a European consortium of 33 leading city networks, research organisations, and urban stakeholders which are supporting cities in various ways to achieve their climate goals.

Kickstarting cross-sectoral collaboration for carbon-neutral development

In Finland, Demos Helsinki convened a 9-actor alliance to put together an ambitious agenda around timber construction. The alliance is called Humble Timber. The project brought together a broad spectrum of building industry stakeholders with the intention of building tangible solutions around the transition to carbon-neutral construction. The alliance identified key bottlenecks and delegated responsibilities to accelerated carbon-neutral development.

Sustainability governance in the city of Tallinn

We collaborated with the City of Tallinn, the European Green Capital 2023,  to develop the concept of sustainability governance and how cities can develop the capabilities and structures to lead sustainable transformation.

Supporting the city of Turku

We brought together the actors of the historical centre and the adjacent campus area to discuss the desired future developments, and collected views from the citizens with a gamified survey. Cooperation with Lundén Architecture Company and the major property owners produced an overview of the frame conditions of the built environment. The desired futures were presented as stories that narrate how Turku Old Town appears and feels like in the future.
