Upamanyu Dutta

Upamanyu works on the intersection of geopolitics, climate governance and societal transformation. His work explores how shifts in the global order are reshaping the politics of climate action, international cooperation and economic transformation, and what this means for building more sustainable and resilient societies.

He holds a Master’s in Environmental Policy from the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po, where he focused on climate diplomacy, international governance and sustainability. He previously studied Sustainable Development in India.

Before joining Demos Helsinki, Upamanyu worked at the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI), where he researched the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the international dimensions of industrial decarbonisation. His work included EU-India climate relations, green steel, and international cooperation on the clean energy transition. He has also worked on environmental and development challenges in India, including climate adaptation, biodiversity governance and sustainable urban development.

At Demos Helsinki, Upamanyu works across different scales of transformation, from local climate adaptation through the FairFuture project to systems-level decarbonisation challenges like the Nordic Near Zero Emissions Steel project. Across both, he brings together questions of energy security, industrial transformation, geopolitics and social change. He is particularly interested in how societies can anticipate change and shape the transitions ahead in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical landscape.

Outside work, Upamanyu spends as much time as possible in the mountains, usually with a camera and a long trail ahead. He also has a longstanding and slightly excessive enthusiasm for tiramisu!
