Theo Cox
Theo is an expert in heterodox economics and political economy. He is particularly interested in how our economic systems interact with (and accelerate) the climate and nature crisis, and the political-economic risks from environmental breakdown in a post-1.5-degree world.
Prior to joining Demos Helsinki, Theo worked as a researcher and consultant with governments, NGOs and IGOs across the UK, Europe and the US. His past career saw him undertake everything from project management and qualitative research to running participatory strategy processes. He’s even spent a 6-month stint in a Buddhist community in France, and 2 years bringing his vision of a new economy to life as director of a community land trust in his home city of Bristol.
In his time at Demos Helsinki, Theo has led projects on topics such as green industrial strategy, beyond-GDP analysis of economic performance and the evaluation of economic policy instruments in supporting sustainability transitions. He also curated a major event on climate security, bringing together experts from Finland, the EU and the UK.
Theo finds himself getting twitchy if he’s not active for too long, so outside of work, you can probably find him doing any number of activities from yoga to crossfit or his one true love of martial arts (at least when he’s not injured). Theo’s also happy to talk to anyone who will listen about all things rap music, from UK legends like Skepta and Kano to US pioneers like the Wu-Tang Clan.
