Building a new economy

Today, policymakers and governments face the impossible task of maintaining prosperity on foundations that no longer hold: growth that can be destructive, visions of wellbeing tied to increasingly unaffordable consumption, and an assumption of stability which seems unlikely to return. Transforming our economies to address this reality is hard work—but it's work we can do together. At Demos Helsinki, we work with those fighting for better economic futures to provide the coordination, analysis, ideas and infrastructure with which to challenge the imaginaries that constrain our thinking, and offer real choices where there seemingly are none.

On the agenda

How can we organise our economies to bring about sustainable and inclusive wellbeing for all within planetary boundaries?

How can organisations, individuals, and movements working on economic transformation better support each other?

What are the dominant narratives, systems and institutions that currently block economic transformation, and how do we overcome them?

MERGE

As part of Horizon Europe, the EU launched a Mission for “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030”. Demos Helsinki contributes to this as part of a European consortium of 33 leading city networks, research organisations, and urban stakeholders which are supporting cities in various ways to achieve their climate goals.

Sufficiency solutions for a resilient, green, and just Finland (SISU)

The multidisciplinary research team of the SISU project models the macroeconomic impacts of new sufficiency solutions to help people recognize different future scenarios, and the effects and experiences related to them. In addition, SISU provides spaces where people can create heritage futures – meanings, practices, and skills – based on sufficiency, which will leave future generations a sustainable world where people can thrive.

Nordic Near-Zero Steel

The Nordic Near-Zero Emissions Steel project is a working example of industrial transformation. The Nordic region stands at the global forefront of near-zero emissions steelmaking. Innovative actors in the field have been constrained by the very institutional apparatuses meant to represent them. The project is unique in that it is built on cross-value chain coordination. Not just producers talking to producers, the entire ecosystem is aligned around shared goals.

Mapping Europe's new economy landscape

The neoliberal project is under pressure. However, years of discontent with the environmental risks and economic inequalities have not led to a collective and organised proposal for a new economic system. This report presents a landscape analysis of the organisations working in Europe to create an economic paradigm shift. Who and where are they? How are they contributing to this cause? What are the steps to foster a thriving and joyful movement that will create an economy that serves the people and the planet?

Using economic instruments for sustainable behaviour change

Even though economic instruments for sustainability purposes have long been implemented in the national policies across the Nordics, their effectiveness remains understudied. This project evaluates the effectiveness of environmental taxes and charges in shifting behaviours of consumers and producers towards a more sustainable direction in the Nordic countries.
