Recent interest in the ethics of artificial intelligence has resulted in a rapid proliferation of guidelines, principles and a broad variety of policies intended to make the development, usage, and governance of AI better aligned with ethical principles. But what do abstract concepts like transparency, fairness and accountability actually mean in practice, beyond their oversimplification when operationalized?
In this event, Prof. Mittelstadt (University of Oxford, Oxford Internet Institute) discusses his work on how to build fair and truthful AI. We will continue with a discussion on the process of translating AI ethics principles into practice, as well as the practical harms of oversimplifying or ignoring ethics.
Lecture abstract
Interest in the ethics of artificial intelligence has grown rapidly in recent years and produced a broad variety of policies, frameworks, and academic work intended to make the development, usage, and governance of AI better aligned with ethical principles. Bringing these types of works down to the ground requires translating abstract normative concepts such as transparency, fairness, and accountability into practical requirements and design decisions. This talk discusses the process of translating AI ethics principles into practice and the practical harms that can result if ethics is oversimplified or ignored. The talk explores two key examples. First, how can ethical principles concerning concepts like ‘bias’ and ‘fairness’ be operationalised for traditional AI systems, and how can attempts to make AI ‘fair’ lead to more harmful systems in practice? Second, what is the impact of large language models like ChatGPT on truth, and what regulatory requirements and usage constraints are essential to protect science and education?
